  • Are JGR and MWR on the same page?

    ard2012
    27 Jan 2015 | 12:43 pm
The 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season saw, overall, at least somewhat lackluster performances from Toyota teams Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing. Sure, JGR put all three of its drivers in the 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup and Hamlin was one of the final four heading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but the three drivers — Kyle Busch, Hamlin and Matt Kenseth — combined for a whopping (sarcasm) two wins. Kenseth, alone, had seven wins the previous season, his first at Joe Gibbs Racing. Then there was Michael Waltrip Racing, an organization that…

    22 Jan 2015 | 1:08 pm
On Thursday morning (Jan. 22, 2015), Jeff Gordon announced that the 2015 race season would be his final season of full-time NASCAR Sprinnt Cup Series competition. In his announcement, Gordon made a point of not calling it retirement, saying he plans to keep busy and remain in the sport in some capacity. He even hinted at a possibility of maybe running a race or two here or there. When you really get down to it, Gordon’s announcement shouldn’t have really been a shock. He uttered the word “retirement” prior to the start of the 2014 season, even if it was in jest, saying…

At the end of this month (Jan. 30), the NASCAR Hall of Fame will induct its latest class of five members — Bill Elliott, Fred Lorenzen, Wendell Scott, Joe Weatherly and Rex White. All the aforementioned drivers blazed their paths to Hall of Fame induction, primarily, for their accomplishments at NASCAR’s top level, in its premier series, if you will. But that hasn’t been the case for all of the already-inducted members. The soon-to-be-inducted class is the sixth into the NASCAR Hall of Fame that opened in 2010. Let’s take a brief look back at some inductees, primarily…

Yes, I did write an opinion piece, of sorts, that I posted here about the idea of “innocent until proven guilty” regarding whether or not NASCAR should or should not suspend Busch at this point in time. I’ve also written a couple or so more newsy pieces giving a…

I don’t know about you guys, but I am LOVING this new Chase format. It’s so intriguing and crazy. The fact that I’m saying this while my favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is currently sitting in an eliminate-able position after Kansas speaks volumes. Even if he’s cut after the next two races I’m still all in on this Chase. I can completely understand why the drivers involved in this deal would hate it but it’s fun that all of the points are reset after each round and drivers are removed from the running. There is always something at stake now, ALWAYS, and…

They come from everywhere. Many of the best drivers in the world – F1, NASCAR, IndyCar, V8 Supercars and, of course, sports car – all gather in Daytona during late January for the world’s second-most famous 24 hour race – the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Unlike LeMans, where truly the best sports car racers in the world gather for the most prestigious event every June, Daytona is traditionally the kick off of the American racing calendar, and most series are weeks or months away from getting going. Because of that, many drivers are freed up from other obligations and available to try what is…

    5 Dec 2014 | 9:48 am
Tonight marks the official end to the 2014 NASCAR season with the series’ annual awards banquet in Las Vegas. It was quite a year for the sport, with NASCAR taking a big gamble on changing its playoff system to an elimination format and a winner-take-all finale at Homestead Miami Speedway. The sport was trying to put more emphasis on winning races, both during the regular season, and then in the playoffs. Ten months later, it’s interesting to review what some of the drivers said via Twitter when the format was started: Jimmie Johnson:  “A big day in the world of @nascar, I'm good…

One of the bucket-list events for anyone who enjoys historic auto racing has to be the annual Goodwood Revival. Looking through photographs and videos of this year’s event it was a pleasure to see one of racing’s true legends – Sir Jackie Stewart – being honored as the “hero” of this year’s event. Twenty-nine cars from Stewart’s career were on site for this year’s Revival, including the Tyrell Ford F1 car he drove in his final season in 1973, when he captured the last of his three World Championships. It’s interesting to note that Stewart actually had a relatively short…

How do you watch auto racing? Certainly, track promoters are hoping you are buying tickets and visiting your local short track, or large, stadium track for events like NASCAR, IndyCar or NHRA. But if you are an avid race fan – and you likely are if you’re reading this – you probably consume much of your racing the way most of America does – on your television. Racing on television has been a pioneer for many innovations, from in-car cameras, to helmet cams, to cameras buried in the track surface, to the cameras on wire that may scream along the front stretch or pit road … sometimes…

The only thing better than arguing over the best all-time race car driver, is arguing about favorite race cars. Taste is certainly in the eye of the beholder.  But often times, favorite race cars are packaged around favorite racing memories – the race you attended, or the legend you saw drive. The great thing is, there is no “right” answer. With so many different forms of racing, and so many different eras of racing, favorite race cars come in all shapes, sizes, and powertrains. RACER Magazine asked its readers at the start of this year to vote for their favorite race cars of all…

  • Longer Loans Fuel Canada’s Auto Industry Boom

    Taras Trofimov
    27 Jan 2015 | 1:39 pm
Canadian auto industry continues to see unprecedented sales numbers on new cars, with the boom being particularly pronounced in 2013 and 2014. The main reason for this surge is the extension on traditional loan terms. According to the data published just a few weeks ago by J.D. Power & Associates, the average loan term in Canada is 74 months or more – which is six months longer than the average in the United States. Experts say that, as a result, many consumers are now willing to purchase expensive crossovers or trucks, allowing the average car loan value to increase 12.5 per cent to…

Buying a new car is expensive and car features, especially those you don’t need, can really take a big bite out of your budget. I’d hate to bum you out, but let’s not forget all the other payments you need to account for, such as insurance, fuel and repairs. When you break it down, features and accessories should be slotted in the “nice-to-have” category. After all, when buying a new car, we should focus on “must-haves.” Drivability and reliability is far more important than keyless entry. Take a look at the auto recall numbers in 2014 and you’ll see that add-on features are…

The common misconception among many prospective car buyers is that luxury cars are too expensive for “regular” folks to afford. But, this notion couldn’t be further from the truth – unless you live below the poverty line, that is. There are several factors that make luxury cars reasonably affordable. For instance, the incentives and rebates tend to be better as a result of higher prices. After all, manufacturers are not stupid – they realize that their vehicles can seem “overpriced”, which is why they are trying to motivate people with good deals. For example, this month, Ford…

The 2015 Ford Focus is an all-new vehicle this year and it’s absolutely fantastic, boasting a revamped exterior, improved cabin functions and a new fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine. The compact-car segment is ludicrously overcrowded and we know exactly why. Compact vehicles are practical and affordable, which means that plenty of people are likely to purchase one. Compact crossovers are some of the most popular vehicles among modern families. They are comfortable, spacious and stylish, which makes them much more attractive than minivans and less rugged than standard SUVs. So, when faced with a choice between two excellent luxury crossovers, like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3, you may feel reasonably overwhelmed. You may feel even more overwhelmed if you’re thinking of buying a used version of the Tiguan from 2014 or earlier. Does the old Tiguan stack up against the brand-new Q3? Let’s compare the two and see which one is better: 2014 Volkswagen…

Both are very limited edition appearance packages, but their missions are different. The Porsche got the nod because where the McLaren is a homage to their 1995 LeMans win, the 911 was built specifically for the Porsche Club of America. That means Porsche expects people to take the Club Coupe to the track.
