  • Asia’s export machine may slow as global growth tapers off: MAS

    31 Oct 2014 | 2:27 pm
SINGAPORE – Slower growth in the advanced economies means that demand for Asias exports will not be as robust as before the global financial crisis, Singapores central bank has warned. The regions fortunes will hinge on the success of structural reforms to lift productivity growth and rebalance demand towards domestic sources, with China and India already taking steps in this direction, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said in its biannual Macroeconomic Review released on Tuesday. Still, the outlook for the Asean economies remains positive in view of their intrinsic strengths,…
  • Structural reform needed to lift Asian economies says MAS

    31 Oct 2014 | 10:34 am
Beyond the next few quarters, according to the regulator, there is concern that some of the advanced economies may be at risk of slipping into a period of sustained sub-par expansion, due to less favourable demographics, lower productivity growth and higher structural unemployment. With monetary policy constrained by interest rates at the zero lower bound, this outcome can still be avoided by appropriate fiscal and supply-side policies, which include tax reforms and measures to increase labour market flexibility. In consequence MAS thinks that slower growth in the advanced economies implies…
