    Jeff Gordon is on the pole in Texas. Gordon won his first pole of the season with a qualifying lap of 191.117 mph at the 1 1/2-mile, high-banked track where he got his only victory of the season in April. It was his first win in Texas. It is the 68th career pole for the four-time champion, who is third in the standings this season. Points leader Jimmie Johnson, who is going for his unprecedented fourth consecutive title, qualified 12th.

    It has long been rumored, now it's happening: Toyota is pulling out of Formula 1. The parent company announced that it was pulling out of the top level of racing due to the continuing financial crisis. Toyota now joins Honda and Bridgestone, in F1, and Suzuki in rallying last year, to leave top level motor sport because of the crisis. John Howett, the president of the F1 team, has told Autosport that the team itself will still be on the grid next year, however.     Overall I think Talladega went down pretty much the same way it would have gone down had NASCAR not instituted the new rules, smaller restrictor plate and no bumping in the turns. Those guys were going to hold off until the end and then crap was going to hit the fan in the final laps.     On Sunday at Talladega two Nascar Sprint Cup Series cars wound up airborne and upside down.  Ryan Newman took a wild ride that saw his car land eventually on its roof, which was crushed in. He had to be cut out of his car once it was flipped over.  Luckily he walked away.  Mark Martin went upside down on a green-white-checkered finish.  This came just months after Carl Edwards got airborne and went into the catch fence in front of the grandstand which injured several fans thanks to flying debris.     It seems this season that no matter what NASCAR does in terms of competition, they get it wrong.  Today’s race at Talladega was yet another example. During the pre-race drivers meeting, NASCAR informed the drivers that they would not tolerate overly aggressive driving and bump drafting in the corners.  Violators would be penalized.
