Jeff Gordon’s career comes full circle, so-to-speak, on Sunday. Sure, he still has most of the 2015 season left before he rides off into the sunset, but this weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway for race two of the 2015 season. AMS is where it all started for Gordon, or at least that’s where the Sprint (then-Winston) Cup act of this NASCAR play got underway. The year was 1992, and Atlanta played host to the season finale that year. I guess it could be said that as one NASCAR Cup level chapter closed, another opened. The race that was…

  • Kurt Busch issue sticks NASCAR between rock and hard place

A lot of news stories came out of the recent Daytona (Fla.) • Throwback Thursday: 1979 Daytona 500

    ard2012
    19 Feb 2015 | 1:00 pm
The Daytona 500 is quickly approaching with the 57th installment of the race coming up Sunday at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. So, is it ironic that much of the U.S. is blanketed by snow and/or ice? The reason I bring up irony is to introduce the first “Throwback Thursday” I’ve written here in this space in awhile. This “Throwback Thursday” goes back to 1979. Some of you may remember it well, some may have been around but too were too young to remember, and others reading this probably remember it well. Remember what? Remember the 1979 Daytona 500,…

The first-ever knockout qualifying session to set the front row for the Daytona 500 is in the books, and while everyone was able to make laps before time ran out, unlike in the qualifying session for the final restrictor plate race of the 2014 season at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Sunday’s qualifying at Daytona didn’t exactly go off without a hitch. Reed Sorenson, driving for a small and underfunded team, did what he felt he needed to do in an attempt to make the Daytona 500 — blocking. Instead, he wrecked, taking Clint Bowyer, Bobby Labonte and J.J. Yeley along with…

The lengthy qualifying process for the Daytona 500 begins Sunday afternoon with front-row qualifying. While Thursday’s Budwesier Duels to set the rest of the field for Sunday’s race will be familiar, Sunday’s session will be different, as it’ll be the first group qualifying session for the Daytona 500. There hasn’t been much talk, as in disgruntled-toned talk, regarding the Budweiser Duels. After all, those races have been run in varying lengths to help set Daytona 500 starting grids for years. The same can’t be said, though, for the whole Sunday group…

Joey Logano is on quite a roll, following up his victory in the Daytona 500 by taking the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Four-time Cup winner Jeff Gordon, who is retiring at the end of the season, called the situation ''absolutely embarrassing.'' I found out last week that I’m not getting a NASCAR hard card (NASCAR-issued annual media credential) this year because I apparently didn’t attend enough races last year. I’ve never seen a list of conditions for keeping a media hard card, nor was I warned ahead of time that I was in danger of losing mine. I also wasn’t told this information until I emailed NASCAR to find out if my 2015 hard card application was in the mail. So if I hadn’t emailed them I would have never known any of this. This was the last straw for me. I’ve been thinking about ending the…

The Earnhardt and Johnson wins were anticlimactic, with the drama saved for Danica Patrick’s desperate bid to make Sunday’s opening race. Whether you are buying your first car or you already own several, you must have wondered at least once why we have to make these purchases at a dealership. After all, there should be other options, right? Take a TV for instance – you can buy one at a retail location, online or directly from the manufacturer, even if it costs $20,000. Yet when it comes to new cars, only a dealership would sell you one. Admittedly, things are changing, with Volvo having recently announced its transition to the online world and Tesla already doing what every other brand isn’t – selling vehicles to…

Our review score: 8 / 10 The 2015 Toyota RAV4 may not be a perfect vehicle, but it does deliver enough goods to stand out in a very crowded market – particularly when it comes to interior comfort and fuel efficiency. Despite what certain other reviews are saying about the vehicle, we like the new Toyota RAV4. It offers enough space to fit a family, while making them comfortable in every way you can imagine. Some of the interior tech gadgets are also worth a look, particularly the Entune infotainment system and the standard rearview camera, which are neat to see on a compact SUV for this…

Safety performance is a top priority for many car buyers. However, with so many new safety features on the market, one must wonder which are actually worth the price – especially in today’s world of recalls. The problem is that many new safety features seem “too cool” to be left out, which is why some people install them without even checking if they are any good. Yet safety organizations like the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) continue to insist that new cars should include more…

One of the best ways to obtain anything is by negotiating for it. Unfortunately, many people just don’t know how to do it. Yet we all have to rely on the process every now and again – either when negotiating a lower price on a car, asking for a higher salary or trying to low our rent. Knowing how to do it is crucial, if success is one of your goals. According to Frank L. Acuff, in the book titled How to Negotiate Anything with Anyone Anywhere Around, negotiations exist in multiple stages, and we wholeheartedly agree. For instance, you can’t just walk into a dealership and ask for a…

The name itself has ties to its French beginnings, and it was created from the phrase Societe de Distribution de Karting.   The Go Kart Racing Scene   Sodi Karts are…

    David Traver Adolphus

There are many reasons a car maker wouldn’t sell a particular car in America. Some of them just didn’t have a presence here but usually, they didn’t think it would make sense to go through the hassle of crash testing and especially, EPA certification. And while many of the cars we never got things like little diesel commuters or weird little vans, a few were performance cars. If you were building a performance car of some kind in the Seventies and Eighties and didn’t want to sell it in the world’s largest market for performance cars, you must have had a pretty…

So maybe you were disappointed when Mercedes-Benz and AMG downsized the Mercedes-AMG GT powerplant to 4.0 liters and 503hp. I mean, sure it’s much cheaper than any previous SLS at $129,000, but you can get a 707hp Challenger Hellcat for half that, a 580hp ZL1 Camaro is around $60,000 and the 520hp Shelby GT350 will be in the same neighborhood. Well sir, if you have indeed been feeling let down then Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing have the vehicle for you. The Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder GT S is priced at a mere $1.2 million, which when you think a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport…

Ferrari 308s are…nice. People are down with V-8 Ferraris now and Magnum, P.I. made the 308 cool, but it never had the same star power as a V-12. That meant there was an audience of Ferrari buyers who were interested in owning a 308, but wanted to stand out like a V-12 owner. And while you’d have a hard time convincing yourself to modify an $85,000 512 BB, your 308 GTB was a $30,000 car, about the same as a Jaguar XJ-S. Customisers and tuners like König were there. König (sometimes Koenig) is best known for high-end wheels today but they have a serious racing heritage and for…

Coupes are the classic serious performance car. Convertibles are great, but with a roof your car is stiffer, safer, and often lighter. Coupes also attract far less unwelcome attention on the road and of course, they’re a lot more fun in the rain. But because they don’t sell well, coupes don’t get the same love from their makers as the latest hybrid crossover. People scared to drive or who just plain don’t know how to drive like to be in tall vehicles that do the work for them. To many, a coupe seems not just impractical, but unsafe. There are exceptions like Mustang…

    David Traver Adolphus
    12 Feb 2015 | 9:45 am
I don’t love the Gran Coupe. I think it’s too big, ungainly and not a coupe. I walk past a 3.0 CS between my door and my desk every day, and that car’s combination of handling, power, build quality and precision make it one of the finest vehicles ever built. Cars like that, the E30 M3 and even the first 323s and 325s redefined the entire class. Somewhere along the way, though, BMW decided what they needed to do was compete with Mercedes-Benz, which meant they had to build cars with the same size and presence. The 4,600-pound, 16.5-foot-long xDrive Gran Coupe certainly…
